When Should I Use Electrolytes?
When Should I Use Electrolytes?
You may know that electrolytes are something that athletes use to stay hydrated, but you don’t fully understand their place in how and when to use electrolytes. Let us help! Before we dive into when you should use electrolyte drinks and electrolyte replacement products let’s first talk about what electrolytes are.
What are electrolytes?
Electrolytes are the minerals and nutrients in your bloodstream. Believe it or not, they provide an electrical charge to your muscles, nerves, and organs to help them function efficiently. They provide a literal spark to cell functions in the body. Electrolytes consist of sodium, potassium, and magnesium.
Where are electrolytes found?
Electrolytes can be found in the food and beverages you consume throughout the day. Everyone needs electrolytes to survive. Naturally electrolytes can be found in some of the following foods: watermelon, strawberry, beans, avocados, spinach, milk, yogurt, chicken, and even canned foods!
Who needs electrolyte replacement?
Everyone needs electrolytes, but some people need them more than others. There are a variety of factors at play here and they include things like level of activity, age, health, the weather, and how much water you consume. Depending on those factors you may need electrolyte replacement.
If you suffer from any of the following you may need electrolyte replacement:
- Acute illnesses. Such as temporary illnesses that cause vomiting or diarrhea.
- Excessive sweating. Through intense workouts, exposure to hot temperatures, or medical conditions that cause excessive sweating
- Chronic illnesses. Some chronic illnesses such as POTS, EDS, other forms of dysautonomia, and more.
Do you fit in the above categories? If so, you may need to increase your electrolyte usage.
When should I use electrolytes?
Knowing your body and how it reacts is really important, but if you’re still unsure you can always watch for signs of dehydration:
- Dizziness
- Headaches
- Muscle Cramps
- Fatigue
- Confusion (brain fog)
- Less urine output
- Dark colored urine
- Feeling thirsty
- Dry skin
- Rapid heart rate
If you’re experiencing any of those symptoms and you suspect you may be dehydrated then use an electrolyte drink.
Electrolytes are for everyone
In the summertime, humidity and heat can be detrimental to your health, and it can be easy to become dehydrated even if you’re doing very little outside. Mowing the lawn, gardening, going for walks or parks can all cause dehydration. Even just sitting outside in the heat can! If you’re in a climate that is hot and humid it’s a good idea to make sure you have an electrolyte replacement around.
Maybe you work outside. Electrolytes are absolutely for you. Ensure you’re able to stay focused on the job by drinking electrolytes.
All ages need electrolytes and may occasionally need electrolyte replacement. Some people sweat more than others and they may need electrolyte replacement.
What’s the best way to replace electrolytes?
The most effective way to stay hydrated at home is with oral rehydration salts. These salts are perfectly balanced with all the nutrients you need to rehydrate. Studies have shown that oral rehydration therapy is just as effective as IV treatment. IV treatment in a hospital is much more costly than keeping a medical grade electrolyte stick around.
NormaLyte is a medical grade electrolyte replacement powder. It is quick and effective at rehydration by using the World Health Organizations new and perfect recipe for oral rehydration. It is safe to use; containing no preservatives, dyes, colors, or artificial sweeteners (in PURE). If you’re experiencing symptoms of dehydration NormaLyte can help you get back to normal. Available in four flavors; PURE, green apple, grape, and orange.
